Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training has announced that thousands of unskilled agricultural labourers will now will be able to benefit from certification after the Agriculture Now Training Unit was certified as a Workforce Assessment Centre on Wednesday June 24th 2015 at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training, Port of Spain Office. Minister Karim said the Workforce Assessment Centres would use the Prior Learning Assessment Recognition (PLAR) programme to continuously assess labourers who may not have the necessary qualifications in their specific areas of expertise, “What this does is recognize your skills, talent and knowledge as well as your aptitude while you are being assessed on the job.

Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training says he will be establishing an Apprenticeship System Programme for the Printing and Packaging Industry – a sector he said is currently suffering from a shortage of labour. He made the announcement at the Symposium on the Printing and Packaging Sector held at the National Academy for Performing Arts (NAPA) on Wednesday 24th June, 2015. Minister Karim said he hopes to do so to aid in the continuation of the Printing and Packaging Sector’s progress. According to him, the Apprenticeship Programme which will developed through the On The Job Training (OJT) Programme will commence soon,

Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training paid a courtesy call on the Board of Directors of The University of the West Indies - Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business (ALJGSB) on Tuesday June 23rd 2015 at the Mount Hope Campus where he asked whether it was possible to include the addition of a vocational course in the education programmes offered by the institution. Speaking to Chairman of Republic Bank Limited and ALJGSB Director Ronald Harford, Minister Karim said, “When you look at an establishment like Associated Brands and the hi-tech equipment you have there, and the sort of skills needed to operate the machinery you might say it is not needed, however I think we have to flip the classroom in a sense, and the time has come for us to carefully analyze whether it is an opportune time to consider the addition of a vocational course on a trial basis.”

Thousands of On the Job Trainees (OJT’s) are set to benefit from product discounts and training opportunities with the launch of an OJT Identification card. The announcement was made today by Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) at the National Energy Skills Center (NESC), Point Lisas on Monday June 22nd 2015. The training opportunities will include free online Microsoft Office certification, free online entrepreneurial training and a work ready certificate. He told the trainees to look forward to the continuance and expansion of the GATE programme, “Early Childhood education is free.
