Marabella North Secondary School Hosts
International Day Of The Girl Child Programme
As a means of empowering and positively motivating the hundreds of female students of Marabella North Secondary School to persevere with their education, the Student Support Services Division (SSSD) of the Ministry of Education (MOE) hosted the Recognition of International Day of the Girl Child Programme at the school. Another objective of the Programme was to build the self-esteem of the students by increasing their sense of self-worth and to believe in themselves to the extent that no matter their circumstances in life, they can rise above their difficulties and become winners.
Speaking at the function was Student Support Services Division Officer, Sherma Coar, who said the SSSD and MOE initiative was also aimed at empowering the students into fully understanding themselves, so that they can make wise choices in every facet of their lives.
“The Ministry of Education and Student Support Services Division is actually empowering women, empowering our young ladies to be even better persons in society from today and as they move forward. To help them do better with their career, in their academic life and in their social life because we know that they are faced with many challenges and many issues as girls. So we wanted to make sure that the country knows that Marabella North Secondary and the Student Support Services Division and the Ministry of Education is doing this meaningful initiative with our students,” she said.
Ms. Coar said that the event is also highlighting the fact that there are many positive developments taking place in the education system involving many students. She stressed that this Programme is not a one off event and will continue into the future.
“We, at the Student Support Services Division and the Ministry of Education, are trying to let people know that there are positive activities taking place with our students and this is just one of them,” she said.
The SSSD Officer added that come November 19th, 2018, Marabella North Secondary School will also be hosting the Recognition of International Men’s Day Programme which will be positively targeting and empowering the male students in the school to continue improving in all aspects of their lives.
The theme of the event was “With Her…A Skilled Girl Force.”
Among the other speakers at the event were Olympians Cleopatra Bovell and Jehue Gordon, Nicole Dyer-Griffith, entertainer Terry Lyons and a female soldier from the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, Sgt. Dick.
