A total of 300 medical students will be accepted at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mount Hope Campus for academic year 2015-2016 as compared to 256 in the last academic year (2014-2015). Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal of the St. Augustine Campus, UWI has advised that by 2016-2017, an additional 100 students will be accommodated at the Teaching Hospital in San Fernando. The decision to control the number of spaces for citizens who would be funded at regional institutions was based on the following issues, namely, the cost of studying at regional institutions; the human resources needs of the country; and the need for specialized doctors as opposed to house officers.
