When can I apply for Financial Assistance?

The programme is advertised quarterly and is advertised on the Ministry’s website, Facebook page and the Ministry of Public Administration website.
Where can I get an application form?
Application forms are obtained through the Financial Assistance (Studies) Programme Secretariat located at the International Waterfront Complex, Tower C, Level 16, 1A Wrightson Road, Port of Spain or on our website. Applications are only accepted during the advertisement period.
Can I submit an application if I was accepted to the University?
No, the applicant must be enrolled in the programme of study which must be approved/recognised by either the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT) or the National Training Agency (NTA).
What are post-secondary courses?
Post-secondary programmes are the level of studying beyond secondary education leading to the award of professional qualifications such as certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas and associate degrees. Post-secondary programmes may be offered at vocational schools or academies, colleges, trade schools, seminaries, institutes of technology or universities.
Is there a limit to the duration of the course of study?
Yes, the programmes of study must be no less than nine (9) months in duration.
Does applying guarantee funding?
No, applying does not guarantee funding.
Would accessing financial assistance obligate the applicant to be employed with the Government on completion of studies? And if so, what is the stipulated period?
It is expected that after the completion of studies, students will undertake employment in the public or private sector for a period in accordance with the quantum awarded and the proposed repayment period.

How long after completion of study do I have to inform the Secretariat?
Awardees must provide proof of completion of the programme of study within three months of completion by submitting a copy of an academic transcript from the academic institution as well as the relevant certification. Failure to comply with the reporting requirement constitutes a breach in the agreement between the government and the awardee
How long after completion of study do I have to acquire a job and inform the Secretariat?
Upon completion of the programme of study the awardee is given six months to acquire a job within the parameter of his or her qualification. The awardee must update the Financial Assistance (Studies) Programme Secretariat on the attempts to seek employment or provide proof of employment in order to satisfy the terms of the agreement. Failure to comply with the reporting requirement constitutes a breach in the agreement between the government and the awardee.
Would I have to repay the grant if I don’t acquire a job within the time stipulated?
No, if reasonable attempts to acquire a job within the stipulated 6-month period are unsuccessful, the awardee would not be penalized. However, the awardee must communicate his/her attempts to acquire a job within the period. If the awardee has made unsuccessful attempts to secure a job and the 6-month period has expired, the awardee will then write the Secretariat advising that due to unsuccessful attempts to secure a job, a formal request is being made to relinquish all obligations to the Government in respect of the said matter.
How much funding can I receive with FASP?
The total value of financial assistance to applicants attending local institutions shall not exceed TT$50,000.00. The total value of financial assistance to applicants attending regional or international institutions shall not exceed US$10,000.00 or CDN $10,000.000 or £5,000.00.

Would funds be distributed directly to the relevant institutions or to the individual applicants?
All tuition and academic fees will be paid directly to the relevant institution while living allowances, transportation, accommodation and other costs will be paid to the students in accordance with the recommendations made by the Financial Assistance Selection Committee.
If the cost of my programme exceeds the maximum amount granted, can I re-apply for additional financial assistance?
Financial Assistance is a one-time assistance from the approval of the policy. The Financial Assistance Selection Committee in evaluating the need for financial assistance ensures the applicant would be able to complete the course of study as it is intended to be supplementary funding and NOT the student’s main source of funding.
As an unemployed student, would I need to fill out the financial affairs section of the application form and would I require a co-signer to be eligible for the financial assistance?
The guarantor(s)/ the person(s) responsible for the daily upkeep of the household will need to complete all information relevant to the financial statements.
Is Financial Assistance awarded based on academic performance?
Financial assistance focuses on the needs of those students with the ability to complete and whose financial resources are limited. However, a minimum GPA of 2.00 must be maintained from year 2 onwards to apply for assistance or for the disbursement of approved tranches.
