No Firearm Found on School Compound

Acting on a claim that a student of the El Dorado West Secondary School was in possession of a firearm on his way to school, the Ministry of Education activated its emergency protocol to scan and search all students, buildings and immediate surroundings of the school for the weapon. A team of stakeholders comprising Police Officers, Community Police representatives, PTA representatives, MTS Officers and School Safety Officers reported that no firearm was found after the thorough search was conducted.

The Ministry of Education places the safety and security of the nation’s students as top priority in instances where such claims are made. The Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and Ministry of National Security continue to work together to mitigate any instances whether real or alleged of indiscipline or disorder in all schools. The School administration of El Dorado West met with staff and stakeholder representatives and gave an update on the matter following which the school day resumed as normal.

Minister of Education, Anthony Garcia assured members of the public that there are policies and procedures in place to treat with instances such as the claim made today; but also cautioned members of the public against making false claims that can be disruptive not only to the school community but can cause panic and concern nationwide.
