Laventille Morvant School Improvement Project (LMSIP)

LMSIP Project Background

In 2016, the Ministry of Education was mandated by Cabinet to operationalize the Laventille Morvant School Improvement Project (LMSIP) for a period of three years. The four components of Parenting in Education; Promoting Discipline and Reducing Violence; Literacy/Numeracy, Teacher Training and Development; and Infrastructure and Aesthetics were operationalized by the LMSIP Unit headed by a Project Coordinator with support from community liaison officers. The LMSIP project targeted twenty (20) primary schools and five (5) secondary schools within the Morvant/Laventille communities with directions as follows:

VISION: To develop and support the potential of every student in academics, sports, arts, history and cultural heritage which empowers them to flourish into inspired, confident and creative learners who will become lifelong achievers and contribute positively to community and society.

MISSION: To produce a plethora of students willing to use their talents and abilities to contribute to their personal growth and national development.

In Financial Year 2021, Cabinet agreed to the implementation of a pilot project by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Community Recovery Committee, involving the under-mentioned four (4) schools within the purview of the Laventille/Morvant School Improvement Project.

•             Excel Beetham Government

•             St Barbs Government Primary

•             Morvant Laventille Secondary

•             Success Laventille Secondary

The Ministry has selected the following five initiatives which will be implemented for the financial year:

(i)            Student Intervention Initiative (Ministry of Education)    

a.            Special Education Intervention

b.            Remediation Intervention

(ii)           Agriculture Initiative (Ministry of Education in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture – 4H Club and Global Villages’ Earth School)

(iii)          Environmental Initiative (Ministry of Education in partnership with the Environmental Management Authority)

(iv)         Curriculum Teaching (Ministry of Education)       

(v)          Infrastructure Initiative (Ministry of Education)  

The primary goals of these Initiatives are:

(i)            to increase the level of literacy/numeracy,

(ii)           to improve overall academic performance

(iii)          to increase the percentage of students completing the primary and secondary education levels,

(iv)         to foster a safe, secure and aesthetically pleasing environment in schools, conducive to supporting quality education,

(v)          to reduce the incidence of violence and indiscipline in schools, and

(vi)         to strengthen the parental and community involvement in the schools by promoting a deep sense of commitment and dedication to supporting the educational experience of their children.

In the rollout of the initiative the Ministry of Education (MOE) will worked in partnership with the Community Recovery Committee (CRC), the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries (MALF), the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), and related Non-Governmental Organisations to offer an overall blend of infrastructural, educational, administrative and social dimensions of programming for the pilot.
