Emergency Meeting Convened with OWTU Representatives

Minister of Education, Anthony Garcia, convened an emergency meeting with President of the Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU) Ancil Roget, a team of representatives from the Union and the Strategic Executive Team of the Ministry to address concerns around the future of the University of Trinidad and Tobago and the staff members the Union represents. The cordial conversation gave the OWTU the opportunity to express their views on matters affecting the University of Trinidad and Tobago.

The Minister gave the assurance to the Union that he will continue to ensure that all avenues are explored to secure the best outcome for all stakeholders of the UTT. Both the Minister and Mr. Roget agreed that the mandate of the UTT is unlike any institution in Trinidad and Tobago and the integrity of this must be upheld.

As the Minister had left a current engagement to meet with the Union representatives and had to return to the event in his constituency in Arima, he agreed to keep the lines of communication between the Union and the Ministry open and will hold a subsequent meeting to discuss strategies that the Union has proposed for mitigating job losses at the university. The overarching agreement between the Minister and the Union was focused on maintaining a dialogue between all parties in an effort to ensure that UTT continues to provide educational opportunities that will benefit Trinidad and Tobago.
