Zero Tolerance to Indiscipline in School Uniform

The Ministry of Education continues to work tirelessly to ensure safety and security of students both on and off of the school compound. As a result of measures put in place by the Ministry at the nation’s schools, acts of indiscipline have migrated to off the compound and into the streets. Education Minister Anthony Garcia has stated that “I am adamant that there will be a zero tolerance policy on matters of indiscipline. Any student found to be engaging in such acts, in school uniform, once identified will be dealt with accordingly.”

The statement follows the second video that has surfaced this week involving students fighting in the streets. The Ministry of Education is now strengthening its partnership with the Ministry of National Security to have a greater presence in areas where there are students congregating. The recent video showing students of El Dorado East and El Dorado West Secondary has been met with complete admonishment by the Minister and the students involved will be referred to the; Trinidad and Tobago Police Service; the Student Support Services Division of the Ministry of Education and a recommendation has been made to have these students removed from the schools and placed in Learning Enhancement Centres where remediation and rehabilitation will take place.

Minister Garcia stated that “The Ministry of Education is committed to ensuring the best possible education for our students, and students who continue to exhibit behaviours that are not in keeping with the quality education, safety or security levels that the Ministry seeks to provide will be treated with accordingly.”

The Minister has reiterated that students found to be engaging in fights, once in school uniform are the responsibility of the Ministry and as such the Ministry will take necessary action to deter any continuation of such behavior.
