NEWS RELEASE

Participants Awarded at Spanish Club Graduation Ceremony

Twenty five participants who successfully completed the second cycle of Spanish Language classes were presented with Certificates at the Spanish Club Graduation Ceremony held at the National Library Information Systems (NALIS), Port-of-Spain on Wednesday 13th June, 2018. This project is a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Education, NALIS and the Latin American Embassies in Port of Spain and aims at encouraging the use of Spanish as a second language among Trinidad and Tobago’s citizens.

Delivering the Feature Address at the function, the Honourable Anthony Garcia, Minister of Education pledged the Ministry’s continued support for the Spanish Club in its drive to spread Spanish nationwide. He assured the audience that the Ministry, in collaboration with the Latin American Embassies, will continue to ensure that Spanish becomes embedded into the Curriculum, enabling more citizens to become bilingual.

“The opportunity to facilitate educational opportunities is always at the forefront of the Ministry of Education and I am looking forward to a continued partnership with all of you to make the Spanish Club, accessible to persons willing to learn. The Ministry of Education will continue to integrate the Spanish language into our schools’ Curriculum and through all of the Latin American Embassies and the Embassy of Spain. We will continue to create and offer opportunities for persons to understand Spanish in addition to the English that they already know, making them more marketable in the world of work,” he said.

Minister Garcia said he was heartened to see that more and more students are becoming fluent in the Spanish language which augurs well for developing a bilingual society in the future.

The cohort of successful participants, who are also members of the Spanish Club, spoke only Spanish in an informal setting during the Spanish Language classes which are held on Wednesday evenings at NALIS.  During the graduation ceremony, participants expressed their satisfaction with the Spanish classes, adding that the experience helped them to further appreciate the beauty of the Spanish Language and to the many enriching aspects of Latin American history and culture.

Ambassadors and other diplomatic personnel from eleven Latin American Embassies such as Argentina, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Dominican Republic, Chile, Spain, Peru and Colombia attended the function.
