T&T Students Exhibit Language Skills at National Spanish Day

The remarkable culture of Latin America was transplanted into a local venue at Naparima College Auditorium, as hundreds of secondary school students put on a dazzling display of their Spanish language and cultural skills before an appreciative audience.

Students exhibited their proficiencies in Spanish by performing poetry, dances, drama and songs. Other students played musical instruments, particularly the guitar with a Latin like flair synonymous with the best guitarists from the nearby South American continent. Another display by students which was met with great applause from the audience was a Salsa dance from the monster Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine pop hit from the 1980s, “Conga.”

The National Spanish Day is an annual event organised by the Ministry of Education's Secretariat for the Implementation of Spanish and Curriculum Planning and Development Division.

Addressing the audience, Dr. the Honourable Lovell Francis, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, urged the students to learn Spanish because of Trinidad and Tobago’s proximity and cultural links to South America. “Students, this is important for you. Trinidad is in the Caribbean, so they say. We are far closer to Latin America, geographically, than we are to most West Indian and Caribbean islands. And it’s really illogical, that we don’t all grow up speaking, particularly, Spanish. It’s something we need to look at because if we live in a world that is becoming smaller and smaller, that is becoming more and more intimate, it’s very ridiculous where you cannot talk to your neighbours because they say some words different from you.” he said.

Among the schools that attended the National Spanish Day 2018 at Naparima College on Thursday March 1st, 2018, were El Dorado West Secondary School, Belmont Boys’ Secondary RC School, Iere High School, North Gate College and St. Joseph Convent, Pot-of-Spain, among others.
