Laventille/Morvant Schools Jump Start Professional Development Season

Principals and senior teachers of primary and secondary schools in Laventille/Morvant gathered for Etiquette and Protocol Training at the Ministry of Education’s Head Office in Port of Spain on June 8, 2018. Representatives from the 25 schools that comprise the Laventille/Morvant School Improvement Project (L.M.S.I.P), participated in the one-day workshop aimed at professional development and empowerment. A second session to focus on Communication Skills is carded for June 22.

Thora Best, Project Lead of the L.M.S.I.P, said that many schools receive impromptu visits from dignitaries and people can be uncertain about how to handle the situation.

She added, “Especially now during graduation season, many prominent guests are invited to attend or to speak at these events and we wanted to ensure that our administrators understand the protocols to be observed. In addition, the skills gained at this workshop will help to advance the culture of order and discipline we want to promote at our schools.”

The L.M.S.I.P, is a project of the Ministry of Education aimed at enhancing students’ academic performance through effective school-based management that targets the promotion of discipline, literacy and numeracy through teacher training and development, parenting in education and infrastructural and aesthetic improvements.

These sessions come ahead of the Annual Professional Development series carded to begin on July 9, 2018 and run for the duration of July/August vacation. These workshops are a part of the Ministry’s goal to engage best practices and empower teachers to be catalysts of change in their classrooms and by extension the wider community.
