World Read Aloud Day 2023

World Read Aloud Day is celebrated locally through a collaboration among the Ministry of Education, Hodder Education and the NALIS. Internationally, World Read Aloud Day is organised by LitWorld- https://www.litworld.org/worldreadaloudday for the promotion of literacy, ‘to celebrate the power of reading aloud to create community and amplify new stories, and to advocate for literacy as a foundational human right.’

In 2023, animated videos of the Minister of Education, the Honourable, Dr. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly and other national icons reading stories will be shared with primary schools in the country. Teachers are encouraged to organise for students to view the videos and engage in discussions about the stories read as well as allow students to articulate their own stories. Students can also draw or sketch scenes from the story read in the video or from their own stories.

As a literacy activity, World Read Aloud Day supports the development of the English Language Arts skills of speaking, listening, reading, writing and representing. Read Alouds promote vocabulary development, build connections between the spoken and written word and promote reading as a fun and enjoyable activity. Whole-school Read Alouds are encouraged throughout this entire day and are endorsed strongly as a frequently used literacy development strategy.

Let’s work together to create a literate world.

Happy Reading!
