VAPA Folk Fest

INTRODUCTION

Despite the continued rising tide of globalization, Trinidad and Tobago must continue to renew its commitment to achieving its sustainable development goals, with the curricula of the Visual and Performing Arts being fundamental to this journey. By reconnecting with a deep sense of self and by reminding our younger generations of their combined history through Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts, a salient contribution can be made to the strengthening of such efforts. In particular, the study of the Visual and Performing Arts is a critical step towards protecting and safeguarding our nation’s intangible cultural heritage. Indeed, the development of our cultural identity must remain a priority with ample opportunities for exploration of its beautiful complexities. There is no better advocate for the Caribbean aesthetic than the languages of the Visual and Performing Arts.

If our national population can substantially increase its knowledge and appreciation of the Folklore and Folk Forms of Trinidad and Tobago, the building of resilience both personally and within communities is expected. Such immersion in the Visual and Performing Arts may also significantly reduce the adverse effects of social isolation over the past two (2) years and provide positive environments for inculcating the appreciation of creative and artistic work. Certainly, these are the types of values that our education system seeks to instill. Integration of the experiences of folk-life and empowerment of all educators by capacity-building will certainly aid retention and preservation for future generations.

The potential of such an enriching experience, with the Visual and Performing Arts National Curricula as a guide alongside first-hand practical knowledge of the Folk Forms and Folklore of Trinidad and Tobago from various communities, is undeniable.
