The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT)

The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) was established in 2004, by the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (GORTT) as an integral component of the country’s national development plan. UTT as a national university would allow the country to keep pace with the rapidly growing needs of industry while ensuring that quality higher learning was within reach of the widest possible constituency.

The formation of UTT involved the integration of several already existing institutions of higher learning into one entity. Therefore, in September 2004, the Trinidad and Tobago Institute of Technology (TTIT) at Point Lisas (established in 2000) was the first to be subsumed under the banner of UTT. Consequently, the first campus of UTT was formally established at Point Lisas. During the period 2004 to 2006, the integration of other tertiary level institutions into UTT continued including the following:

  • Corinth Teachers’ College
  • Valsayn Teachers’ College
  • San Fernando Technical Institute
  • John S. Donaldson Campus Technical Institute

Initially, curricular emphasis was on science and technology, but as UTT continued to evolve it incorporated other disciplines and expanded its programme offerings in accordance with the government’s mandate for UTT to be more responsive to the needs of industry and national development priorities. In order to provide industry relevant tertiary education, UTT has forged alliances with national, regional, and global partners in both education and business. With an emphasis on innovation, entrepreneurship and sector driven research to facilitate growth, today UTT offers a wide range of programmes from the certificate to doctoral level where experiential learning opportunities are integrated with more traditional teaching and learning approaches. The establishment of four new Academies with a focus on studies in culture, performing arts, fashion and sports allows for significant focus on non-traditional areas of study and development.
